The Stellenbosch Wine Routes straddles the Old World and New World and is one of the richest and most diverse wine regions in the world. Grapes were planted shortly after Simon van der Stel founded the “City of Oaks” in 1679, and visitors today traverse breath-taking mountain passes past vine-covered foothills and 17th-century Cape Dutch buildings. The Stellenbosch Wine Routes have been trendsetters and leaders in wine marketing and tourism since 1971; not only was Stellenbosch Wine Routes established to the first organised network of cellar door activities, it also hosted the first food and wine festival in 1976.
