Chiedza Vushe – Turning a Spark into a Platform for Creatives

In August, as South Africa reflects on the achievements and contributions of women, Stellenbosch Network is proud to honour Chiedza Vushe, founder of FineApp, as our Entrepreneur of the Month. Her story is a reminder of how even the smallest idea, in her case scribbled down in a notebook, can grow into something that creates opportunities for others.

From a birthday dilemma to a business

The origins of FineApp traces back to a simple frustration: Unable to find an affordable photographer for her own birthday Chiedza decided to create the solution herself. With no camera experience, she turned to YouTube tutorials, took free portraits for her residence mates, and built confidence one photo at a time.

That one-off decision blossomed into FineApple Pixels, a student-led photography brand, which has since transformed into FineApp – a digital hub connecting photographers, videographers, designers, and content creators with clients who need their skills.

“It’s never just been about photos. For me, it’s about creating opportunities, breaking down barriers, and showing that creativity can be a powerful way to build community and careers,” says Chiedza.

Rooted in resilience

Born in Zimbabwe and raised in a family of scientists and engineers, Chiedza initially imagined a future in Data Engineering or academia. Moving to South Africa for her studies, however, opened new doors. Today, she is a Data Science undergraduate at Stellenbosch University (SU), blending her academic focus with her entrepreneurial ambitions. That combination of technical rigour and creative drive, has shaped FineApp’s unique identity as both a practical solution and a community-building platform.

Recognition on bigger stages

Chiedza’s entrepreneurial vision has already earned her recognition across multiple platforms. In 2024, she represented SU at the EDHE Entrepreneurship Intervarsity Nationals, standing alongside three other SU innovators on a national stage. Later that year, she was named a winner at the Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s inaugural Academic Innovation Awards, hosted in partnership with the Cape Higher Education Consortium (CHEC) and MTN.

She has also been invited to share her perspective on innovation alongside university leadership. In a recent panel discussion, she sat alongside Professor Deresh Ramjugernath (SU Rector and Vice-Chancellor), Professor Tulio de Oliveira (Founding Director of the Centre for Epidemic Response and Innovation – CERI) , Anita Nel (Chief Director of Innovation and Commercialisation at SU), and one of SU’s biotech spinout founders – highlighting her role not just as a student entrepreneur, but as a voice shaping the conversation about innovation at Stellenbosch University.

FineApp today

Today FineApp is a fully fledged platform offering secure online payments, in-app messaging, and streamlined booking systems that make it easier for clients to connect with creatives. As official vendors for Stellenbosch University, the team has already partnered with departments and events, proof that there is potential for student-born innovations to collaborate with large organisations.

For Chiedza, the heart of FineApp is cultural:

“We’ve built a space where authenticity matters, where creatives support each other, and where we’re all working towards a bigger vision. That’s the heartbeat of FineApp.”

Challenges and lessons

The road has not been without obstacles. Balancing studies with the demands of a startup, navigating imposter syndrome, and competing against established companies have tested her resilience. Yet each challenge has reinforced her belief in starting small, staying authentic, and leaning into community support.

For aspiring entrepreneurs, she offers practical wisdom anchored in experience:

“Dreams without goals are just dreams. Start scared, start unprepared, but just start. Every small, imperfect step moves you closer to your vision. You’ll figure it out along the way.”

Women leading change

This recognition, arriving during Women’s Month, carries special meaning. FineApp has always been powered by strong female representation, something Chiedza views not as unusual but essential.

“I’ve never seen being a woman as a barrier. For me, it’s a privilege to create spaces where women can thrive too. This recognition is a reminder of how far we’ve come and how much further we can go.”
