Dr Gestel Kuyler, CEO of Nanosene

Dr Gestel Kuyler – Entrepreneur of the Month, August 2024

Dr. Gestél Kuyler, a qualified polymer scientist and CEO of Nanosene (Pty) Ltd., is making waves in the world of molecular drug target research. As the co-inventor of Nanosene’s core technology (patent pending), Kuyler’s journey from academia to entrepreneurship is both inspiring and unconventional.

Founded in 2022 by Kuyler and Prof. Bert Klumperman, Nanosene designs and supplies specialised polymers for molecular drug target research. The company’s innovative approach focuses on low-volume, high-value products, filling a crucial gap in the polymer science field.

From Scientist to Entrepreneur

Despite not initially planning a career in business, Kuyler’s scientific research unexpectedly led her down the entrepreneurial path. “I sought a life of adventure and travels,” she recalls. “Little did I know that my scientific research would provide me with the opportunity to do just that!”

Transitioning from the science lab to the business world presented its own set of challenges for Kuyler. While she often finds herself one of few women in the boardrooms, she chooses to focus on the unique perspective and skills she brings to the table, using this to her advantage. “Believing in yourself, your skills, and your capacity to learn and adapt to changing situations is essential,” she advises.

Nanosene boasts a strong team of experts:

Prof. Bert Klumperman: Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer, a renowned polymer scientist with extensive academic and industrial experience.

Dr. Elaine Barnard: Operations Manager, bringing valuable research and development skills and fresh insights to the team.

Transforming Polymer Science

Nanosene’s polymer-stabilised Nanodisc technology opens up numerous collaborative opportunities within the research community and commercial partnerships. The company serves as the commercialisation avenue for innovations developed within the Klumperman Research Group in the Department of Chemistry and Polymer Science at Stellenbosch University (SU).

Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

Kuyler shares valuable insights for academics considering the entrepreneurial path:

  1. Embrace the journey: “The reality is that ending up on the cover of Forbes is unlikely for most. However, the journey itself is so valuable. It offers many opportunities for growth and self-discovery. “
  2. Focus on continuous improvement: “Being a little bit better and learning a little bit more every day is a mindset that can help you embrace and ultimately enjoy the process.”
  3. Build a strong team: “Create a space where high standards are set, and team members are aligned with your vision and values. Cultivate an environment where everyone’s skills and contributions are valued, where individuals are confident in their ability to learn while promoting open communication.”

With support from Stellenbosch University, Innovus, and SU Launchlab, Nanosene continues to push the boundaries of polymer science, promising exciting developments in the field of molecular drug target research.
